As we focus our attention on commemorating the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022), the Mint will not be issuing any 2023-dated Canadian circulation coins featuring both the traditional reverse designs and an obverse featuring Queen Elizabeth II.

On February 6, 1952, King George VI of England died of illness, and Princess Elizabeth, who was visiting Africa, succeeded to the throne at the age of 25. It can be said that the 96-year-old Queen has completely dedicated her life to the British royal family. In the hearts of many people, she not only witnessed history, but her experience is a living history book.

1977 is the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne, also known as the Silver Jubilee. The Queen was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd as she toured the country. On June 7 that year, the Queen and her husband took the royal golden carriage from Buckingham Palace to St Paul's Cathedral for the 25th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne. She delivered a speech, reaffirming her promise when she was enthroned, that she would do her duty and fulfill her promise for the rest of her life. She said although it was a promise she made in her green years, she never regretted it and never broke her promise.

Throughout her life, she was a symbol of resilience and dedication, guiding the monarchy through decades of profound social and political change. As Head of the Commonwealth, she fostered unity across diverse nations and remained a steadfast figure on the global stage. Queen Elizabeth II passed away on 8 September 2022, and was succeeded by her eldest son, King Charles III. In 2026, the world commemorates what would have been her 100th birthday—celebrating a life of service, dignity and devotion to her country and the Commonwealth.

The coin’s reverse features a stylised representation of the commemorative florin issued in 1954 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s first visit to Australia. It showcases a lion and a kangaroo standing side by side, a powerful symbol of the enduring bond between the United Kingdom and Australia. Both the lion and kangaroo, as well as the coin’s outer rim are gilded in 24-carat gold. Surrounding the design is the inscription ‘H.M. QUEEN ELIZABETH II 100th ANNIVERSARY’, accompanied by stylised dots, the 2026 year-date, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
