The coin is dedicated to mark 50 years since the formation of Irish band U2 in 1976. The national side of the coin depicts the name of the band U2 along with an image of all four bandmembers (L-R) Adam Clayton, Bono, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. It also references the band’s 50th Anniversary (1976-2026), as well as the name of the issuing member state Éire. Formed in 1976 after Larry Mullen Jr. posted a sign which read ‘Drummer Seeks Musicians’ on the school noticeboard at Dublin’s Mount Temple Comprehensive,’ U2 has gone on to be acknowledged as one of the best live acts in the world, touring the globe countless times; released 15 studio albums; sold over 175m albums; and won numerous awards, including 22 Grammys and Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience award.
