Description: Description of the design: The design was created by Noel Galea Bason and depicts the walled city known locally as ‘Iċ-Ċittadella’ (The Citadel) on the island of Gozo, which is the second largest island forming the Maltese archipelago. In their present form, the fortifications encircling the ‘Ċittadella’ were built and modified by the Order of St John. The design shows a depiction of the city with its fortified walls. At the bottom left is the inscription of the issuing country ‘MALTA’ and at the bottom right is the year of issuance ‘2024’. At the top is the inscription ‘ĊITTADELLA’ and underneath is the inscription ‘GOZO’. This coin is intended to be part of a series dedicated to Maltese walled cities e.g. Mdina and Valletta which are an intrinsic part of Maltese and European cultural heritage. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.

Mdina, the ancient capital of Malta, is perched on elevated ground at the centre of the island and traces its origins to at least the 8th century BC. Originally known as Melite during Roman times, the city's defensive perimeter was retrenched by the Byzantines. Notably, it withstood a Moorish siege in 1429 and served as a military post during the Great Siege of 1565. Mdina's importance declined after Valletta was built. Under British rule, its fortifications were decommissioned. Today, Mdina is a preserved historical city, housing museums, archives, and heritage sites, and is listed on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.

“Raili & Reima Pietilä” -two of the most influential architects in Finland during the 1960’s.Raili (1926 – 2021) and Reima (1923 – 1993) Pietilä were architects in Finland during the 1960’s. Raili Paatelainen graduated as an architect in 1956 at the Helsinki University of Technology. Reima Pietilä graduated in 1953 when he was almost 30 years old. Raili and Reima started working at the same agency: their first joint project was the Dipoli Student Union Building of the Helsinki University of Technology, designed in 1961. They got married in 1963.

This 2 Euro Coin in Proof Quality has been exclusively designed by Pekka Rytkönen, as a tribute to Raili and Reima Pietilä. On the obverse, one of their most important buildings: Dipoli, now in hands of Aalto University but originally owned by the Helsinki University of Technology. Here, the Mercury Staff is visible, and also the initials FI and the year 2026 are depicted here. On the right the initial R, referring to Pekka Rytkönen. The reverse shows the national side of the 2 Euro Coin.
