To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Musée d'Orsay, the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) is lending the exceptional talents of its artisans to the museum. Conceived by the Monnaie de Paris in close collaboration with the Musée d'Orsay, the Excellence à la Française 2026 collection brilliantly illustrates the perfectly mastered fusion of their two worlds.

On the obverse of this coin, several figures from iconic works interact beneath the nave's glass roof, as if awake and discovering the museum together. In the foreground, François Pompon's Polar Bear and Vincent van Gogh's Self-Portrait stand side by side; behind them are Édouard Manet's Fifer and Claude Monet's Woman with a Parasol Facing Left. Also featured is Edgar Degas's Little Dancer Aged Fourteen, captured inside the building, in front of the large clock on the fifth floor. With a single gesture, all these decorative elements are incorporated into the reproduction of the clock's frame, a key object in the history of the Musée d'Orsay building.

On the reverse side of this coin, the main subject relates to the architectural structure of the Musée d'Orsay. It features four of the coffers decorated with rosettes that adorn the nave. They are encased in a metal structure decorated with rivets, reproducing the rhythm of the nave's ceiling, unchanged since the construction of the Gare d'Orsay.

Drawing it’s inspiration from the presence of Angels on Napoleon’s Death medal and his tomb at Les Invalids.

Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island of Corsica in 1769. He is widely regarded as one of history’s great military minds, building an Empire that stretched across Europe before his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He was exiled to St Helena, where he remained until his death in 1821.

While Napoleon’s military cunning is undisputable, it is also believed that he carried a symbol of good luck with him, his own personal guardian angel.

The French Angel Coin first appeared in the late 18th Century. Its designer became suspected of revolutionary tendencies and was sentenced to death but somehow escaped the guillotine. Allegedly he bribed his captors with an Angel Coin, and it became known as a lucky charm. 19th Century French Naval Captains would refuse to sail without one in their purse, and even Napoleon was not beyond belief in the lucky Angel Coin. According to folklore he carried one in his pocket throughout his reign, only to fatefully lose it the day before his final defeat at Waterloo.

Shortly after the death of Emperor Xian Feng in 1861, his concubine Cixi assumed control and ruled China as The Empress Dowager. Cixi was able to read, a rare skill at that time, and educated herself on domestic and foreign affairs, creating policies that would modernise China’s culture and economy. Recognising the importance of making international trade as easy as possible she instigated changes in customs, weights and measures that enabled the creation of a standardised ‘Dragon’ Trade Dollar.

Trade Dollars had been used to facilitate international trade since the ‘Spanish Dollars’ of the 15th Century, and the first ‘Dragon’ Trade dollars were struck in 1889 with the coin’s weight in English lettering sitting beneath a traditional Chinese dragon. Now, the Chinese Trade Dollar is reimagined for 2021 by The East India Company, our stunning Proof finish emphasising every detail of a new design that features a mighty dragon encircling the globe.

This limited-edition silver 1oz coin is presented in a luxurious presentation case along with a booklet and numbered certificate of authenticity.
