Reproduction of the painting "Winter" by Vilhelms Purvītis, using colour print.

This release is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the painter, Vilhelms Purvītis.

Vilhelms Purvītis (1872-1945) was one of the key figures of Latvian visual art in the first half of the 20th century, and the founder and modernizer of Latvian landscape painting.

The obverse features a colorized reproduction of the painting “Winter," with elements such as the majestic lacy birch trees, the glistening lake, and the overcast winter sky. The painting has been transferred to the coin using glaze, texture and mirror surface, of varying intensity.

The reverse shows the plaster model of the same painting with several types of surfaces, worked in different ways, to a more or less intensified glaze effect.

As marigolds turn their heads to follow the trajectory of the sun from east to west, they suggest things are moving forward. Marigolds encompass numerous plants from entirely different species, the two most common being Calendula and Tagetes. They both belong to the Asteraceae family, are easily mistaken for one another and have many common properties.
