The silver coin of the Czech Mint from the gift series with motifs of 12 signs of the zodiac will become not only a beautiful, but also a valuable talisman for everyone who was born in the sign of Aquarius.

Aquarius, Latin for Aquarius, is one of the oldest observed constellations in the zodiac. It is associated with a number of legends, but in all of them it has the form of a man with a bucket, a jug or other vessel. In Egyptian mythology, Aquarius caused the flooding of the Nile, in Greek myths it was Zeus who punished sinful humanity with a stream of water. The celestial ruler of the born in the sign of Aquarius is the planet Uranus, which in astrology is a symbol of change, coups, unrest, but also originality. Aquarius is often given a desire for freedom and the demolition of old order. Therefore, they often become thinkers, discoverers, artists and visionaries who are ahead of their time. Sometimes, however, they also show inadaptability and a tendency to be different at all costs. Surprisingly, the element of aquarius is not water, but air which signifies extraterrestrial thinking.

he coin of a non-traditional oval shape bears a colored image of Aquarius in the form of an ancient man with an amphora on the reverse side. Photographs or computer graphics were not used as a template for coloring - the author of the coin, Asamat Baltaev, DiS., created an original watercolor painting. The relief in the background behind Aquarius presents a disk with a dozen zodiac signs. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with a Latin inscription of AQUARIUS and an astrological symbol. Since the coins of the Czech Mint are licensed by a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, their obverse sides bear its national emblem, the nominal value of ONE DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2021. All this is surrounded by twelve astrological signs.

Shortly after the death of Emperor Xian Feng in 1861, his concubine Cixi assumed control and ruled China as The Empress Dowager. Cixi was able to read, a rare skill at that time, and educated herself on domestic and foreign affairs, creating policies that would modernise China’s culture and economy. Recognising the importance of making international trade as easy as possible she instigated changes in customs, weights and measures that enabled the creation of a standardised ‘Dragon’ Trade Dollar.

Trade Dollars had been used to facilitate international trade since the ‘Spanish Dollars’ of the 15th Century, and the first ‘Dragon’ Trade dollars were struck in 1889 with the coin’s weight in English lettering sitting beneath a traditional Chinese dragon. The stargazers of ancient Greece referred to it as zodiakos kyklos, the “circle of animals,” and on this 99.99% pure silver coin from the Royal Canadian Mint, the artistic representation of the Zodiac was partly inspired by the marble statues of the Classical period. Running counter clockwise in zodiacal order around the Sun and Moon, each of the 12 signs of the Zodiac – from Aries (“1”) to Pisces (“12”) – is represented by a classical figure in the outer circle and a corresponding glyph in the inner portion, while touches of celestial colours speak to humanity’s fascination with the night sky.

Enhanced with selective colour, the reverse design by artist Steve Hepburn features an engraved celestial illustration of the Sun and Moon surrounded by the 12 signs of the Zodiac. Inspired by classical Greek sculpture, the figures representing each sign on the outer circle are paired with their corresponding glyph in the second band, which is set against a colourful night sky, and these are numbered based on their zodiacal order (beginning at the top and moving in a counterclockwise direction): Aries (“1”), Taurus (“2”), Gemini (“3”), Cancer (“4”), Leo (“5”), Virgo (“6”), Libra (“7”), Scorpio (“8”), Sagittarius (“9”), Capricorn (“10”), Aquarius (“11”) and Pisces (“12”). The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.

As marigolds turn their heads to follow the trajectory of the sun from east to west, they suggest things are moving forward. Combined with their bright colours, this has led to meanings of joy, gratitude, warmth, affection, peace, protection, contentment and understanding. It’s little wonder that some people refer to the third flower in the Language of Flowers series as ‘the sunshine herb’.

Marigolds encompass numerous plants from entirely different species, the two most common being Calendula and Tagetes. They both belong to the Asteraceae family, are easily mistaken for one another and have many common properties. Conveniently, the two species also have the same basic meanings in the language of flowers, many of which focus on positivity and patience. With their golden hues and positive energy, marigolds are said to bring light into any situation and have the ability to illuminate and guide us when faced with challenges.

Their strong connection with the sun means that marigolds are also associated with heat, passion, sex and love. Apparently, both Calendula and Tagetes can be used in spells relating to passion, creativity and warmth and have also been used in love potions and spells to maintain devotion for the long term. Marigolds also have multiple culinary uses and health benefits, and these cheerful, exceptionally long-flowering and easy-to-grow flowers are perfect for brightening our gardens and homes.

Symbolising positivity, the coin’s obverse shows a young woman with her eyes closed and flowers in her hair enjoying the scent of a marigold. Next to an ornamental side image of a marigold, the reverse of the coin features a pair of marigolds, both of which are imprints of real flowers.

This year, it's the Battle of Cowpens medal that will be honoured.

The Battle of Cowpens, in South Carolina, took place on January 17th, 1781. It was a crushing victory for the armed forces led by General Daniel Morgan against the British, led by Banastre Tarleton, resulting in the capture, disappearance, or death of around 75% of the British forces.

This first military success, which led to victory at Yorktown and to the Declaration of Independence, was the subject of three commemorative medals decided by Congress: a gold one awarded to General Morgan, and two silver ones awarded to William Washington, commander of the cavalry, and John Eagar Howard, commander of the infantry. They were decided during the time when Benjamin Franklin and D. Humphrey were negotiating in Paris the alliance with France that would lead to the Treaty of Paris signed in September 1783.

The obverse, illustrating Daniel Morgan's Victory, depicts him full-length, about to be crowned by an Indian queen, an allegory of America; a female figure wearing a short breastplate and a feathered headdress. The acronym RF and the yeardate were added to the obverse.

The reverse shows the General-in-Chief leading the charge on horseback, followed by his troops on foot and overthrowing the fleeing English adversary. It is signed by the engraver Augustin Dupré, who was the general engraver of Monnaie de Paris at the time. The face value and hallmarks were added to the reverse.
