UNA & THE LION, Beauty, Strength, & Honour.
The legend of Una & the Lion dates back to the 16th Century and Edmund Spencer’s epic medieval poem, The Faerie Queene. Una is a beautiful princess on a quest to rescue her parents from a dragon who has imprisoned them in a tower. She encounters a fierce lion whose rage is subdued as he is captivated by Una’s beauty and innocence. He becomes her faithful companion, forever by her side, protecting her from harm.

The relationship between Una & the Lion and the great coin designers began with the 1839 five-pound piece, produced to mark the first anniversary of the coronation of Queen Victoria. It featured a bold neoclassical design by William Wyon, whose Una & the Lion symbolised the young Queen Victoria harnessing the power of the mighty British nation, represented by the Lion. It is now recognised as one of history’s most beautiful coin designs, a legacy which continues with the East India Company’s annual Una & the Lion Collection.

Shortly after the death of Emperor Xian Feng in 1861, his concubine Cixi assumed control and ruled China as The Empress Dowager. Cixi was able to read, a rare skill at that time, and educated herself on domestic and foreign affairs, creating policies that would modernise China’s culture and economy. Recognising the importance of making international trade as easy as possible she instigated changes in customs, weights and measures that enabled the creation of a standardised ‘Dragon’ Trade Dollar.

Trade Dollars had been used to facilitate international trade since the ‘Spanish Dollars’ of the 15th Century, and the first ‘Dragon’ Trade dollars were struck in 1889 with the coin’s weight in English lettering sitting beneath a traditional Chinese dragon. Now, the Chinese Trade Dollar is reimagined for 2021 by The East India Company, our stunning Proof finish emphasising every detail of a new design that features a mighty dragon encircling the globe.

This unique and special edition of Napoleon coins are a fitting tribute to the 200th Anniversary of his passing. Very few leaders in world history have had such an impact. What would the world look like if he would have won at Waterloo?

These coins are issued by the island of Saint Helena. Saint Helena is a British territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean 1870 km away from the coast of South Africa. It is here where Napoleon spent the last 6 years of his life living in exile. Even while in exile, he studied English with the goal of being able to read English newspapers and books. He was a natural born leader from a very young age and these four coins uniquely capture a time in his life when his life had no boundaries.

The coins show designs that capture a youthful Napoleon in ultra high relief detail, quite different than the traditional images that exist. His strong features as well as his aspiring expression on his face hints at the extraordinary future he will eventually have. Behind him is the Arc de Triomphe which has been a fitting legacy monument to his greatness. Around the outside edge are his lifetime milestones which list the many reasons he was so heralded.

There will be a silver 2 oz and a 1 oz Proof. Mintage on the 2 oz will be only 821 and the mintage on the 1 oz only 1821. There will be a 1/4 oz gold Proof as well as a half gram gold Proof. Similar in design to the silver pieces with an extraordinary amount of detail and relief. Mintage on the 1/4 oz gold is a very small 500 and the mintage on the half gram is only 2500.

Drawing it’s inspiration from the presence of Angels on Napoleon’s Death medal and his tomb at Les Invalids.

Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island of Corsica in 1769. He is widely regarded as one of history’s great military minds, building an Empire that stretched across Europe before his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He was exiled to St Helena, where he remained until his death in 1821.

While Napoleon’s military cunning is undisputable, it is also believed that he carried a symbol of good luck with him, his own personal guardian angel.

The French Angel Coin first appeared in the late 18th Century. Its designer became suspected of revolutionary tendencies and was sentenced to death but somehow escaped the guillotine. Allegedly he bribed his captors with an Angel Coin, and it became known as a lucky charm. 19th Century French Naval Captains would refuse to sail without one in their purse, and even Napoleon was not beyond belief in the lucky Angel Coin. According to folklore he carried one in his pocket throughout his reign, only to fatefully lose it the day before his final defeat at Waterloo.

We can be proud of the Czech glass - our craftsmen became famous throughout the world and it still has the sound of a prestigious product with an exceptional quality of. Therefore it is entitled to the second issue of the series of silver coins representing the historical milestones in glass manufacture.

The first written mention of glass production in Bohemia dates back to the 1162. The most glorious period of Czech glassmaking, however, occurred in the 17th and 18th centuries, when the Baroque craftsmen made the first Czech crystal. Their extraordinary discovery overshadowed, until then, the unequaled Venetian glass (to which was dedicated the first issue of this series) and have gained an unrivaled position in the European markets. Although their secrets were eventually revealed, the Czech glass conquered the world. The Czech crystal chandeliers hung in the courts of rulers such as Louis XV., Maria Theresa or Elizabeth I Petrovna. Jablonec nad Nisou in North Bohemia played an important role in glass expansion, when at the end of the 19th century they produced 65% of the world’s production of glass jewellery. The field employed over 30,000 workers. The 20th century also began magnificently for the region, when for the year 1911, the Jablonec entrepreneurs handed over taxes to the Habsburg monarchy of the same amount as all the Crown land of Dalmatia put together. At the end of the 20th century, the glass Jablonec nad Nisou also became the city of coinage - it is now the seat of the Czech Mint.

The coin, prepared by the German company Numiscom in cooperation with the Czech Mint and the Jizera company Glass Pesničák, consists of two parts. The first takes the form of a ring minted from two ounces of pure silver. The reverse side of the ring bears the inscription BOHEMIA GLASS and the decorative motif performed in the style of Cubism of Prague. The obverse of the ring is dedicated to the attributes of the issuer of the coin - the emblem of the Republic of Congo, the year of issue 2016 and the nominal value of 1000 FRANCS CFA. The center of the coin then consists of glass of red color with a motive, which is a typical example of the skill of North Bohemian glass makers.

Thanks to authentic workmanship, no two coins are the same. A part of each coin are a refined frame and a booklet in English, which tells the story of this unique issue.
