One of the world’s leading opera, theatre and classical music festivals, the Salzburg Festival celebrates its centenary in 2020. Featuring opera, theatre and classical concerts, the Salzburg Festival offers a broader spectrum of cultural variety than any other. To celebrate this major cultural event, which is constantly in the process of reinventing itself, we have come up with a particularly innovative coin design.

On 22 August 1920, the director Max Reinhardt staged Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s morality play Jedermann in Salzburg’s Domplatz (Cathedral Square) for the first time and in doing so






founded the Salzburg Festival. Since 1926, the play has been a permanent feature of the festival programme, a tradition interrupted only during the Nazi regime. Those who stage or direct Jedermann in Salzburg’s Domplatz have reached the pinnacle of their career.

In addition to Max Reinhardt and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the composer Richard Strauss was also involved in the founding of this magnificent celebration of the performing arts, which did not take long to become established and achieve world renown. At Salzburg, the best is often not good enough. This gives the festival cultural relevance, which comes from its strength of tradition but also allows new directions to be explored and puts the avant-garde centre stage. This very special centenary coin is avant-garde itself. With an obverse that has the appearance of a plate with a flat inner part, a coin of this type has never been minted before. We believe it does the Salzburg Festival justice.

Presenting the third Black and Gold coin from the Royal Canadian Mint. One of the things nature does best is balance, and the sea otter is the perfect example: this adorable creature works hard, but it also makes time to float arm-in-arm (or paw-in-paw) with a loved one. Once hunted to the point of extinction on Canada's Pacific coast, the sea otter hos been reintroduced to its farmer habitat, where its appetite keeps sea urchin populations in check-this, in turn, helps to protect the kelp forests that are home to hundreds of other species. lt's all about balance, which is beautifully represented on this coin's dual-plated reverse.

The circular reverse design by wildlife artist Claude Thivierge features a contrasting “yin and yang” portrait of the sea otter (Enhydra lutris). Two adult sea otters are positioned in a way that represents opposite but complementary concepts, such as work and rest/play. Yellow gold and black rhodium plating clearly divide the design into two halves in order to highlight the importance of achieving balance in life, but also in nature, where the sea otter’s reintroduction to Canada’s Pacific coast has had a big impact on the marine ecosystem. The obverse features the gold-plated effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the British Government announced the Great Recoinage of 1816 to restabilise the currency. A competition was launched to find designs for these new coins, which included an entry from a young Assistant Engraver called William Wyon; The Three Graces.

While Wyon’s design did not win the competition, around 50 test ‘Pattern Pieces’ were produced which showcased his design in its full glory and went on to become highly valued collectors’ items as William’s output flourished.

Wyon’s most famous designs were produced during the reign of Queen Victoria. His ‘Young Head’ portrait of the new Queen first went into circulation in 1838 while his Una and the Lion is one of history’s most beautiful coin designs and a firm favourite of collectors of East India Company Bullion.

The Three Graces remains an early marker from a remarkable career and is available to collectors once again as the first issue in our Masterpiece Collection.
