Shortly after the death of Emperor Xian Feng in 1861, his concubine Cixi assumed control and ruled China as The Empress Dowager. Cixi was able to read, a rare skill at that time, and educated herself on domestic and foreign affairs, creating policies that would modernise China’s culture and economy. Recognising the importance of making international trade as easy as possible she instigated changes in customs, weights and measures that enabled the creation of a standardised ‘Dragon’ Trade Dollar.
Trade Dollars had been used to facilitate international trade since the ‘Spanish Dollars’ of the 15th Century, and the first ‘Dragon’ Trade dollars were struck in 1889 with the coin’s weight in English lettering sitting beneath a traditional Chinese dragon. Now, the Chinese Trade Dollar is reimagined for 2021 by The East India Company, our stunning Proof finish emphasising every detail of a new design that features a mighty dragon encircling the globe.
This limited-edition silver 1oz coin is presented in a luxurious presentation case along with a booklet and numbered certificate of authenticity.

Drawing it’s inspiration from the presence of Angels on Napoleon’s Death medal and his tomb at Les Invalids.
Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island of Corsica in 1769. He is widely regarded as one of history’s great military minds, building an Empire that stretched across Europe before his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He was exiled to St Helena, where he remained until his death in 1821.
While Napoleon’s military cunning is undisputable, it is also believed that he carried a symbol of good luck with him, his own personal guardian angel.
The French Angel Coin first appeared in the late 18th Century. Its designer became suspected of revolutionary tendencies and was sentenced to death but somehow escaped the guillotine. Allegedly he bribed his captors with an Angel Coin, and it became known as a lucky charm. 19th Century French Naval Captains would refuse to sail without one in their purse, and even Napoleon was not beyond belief in the lucky Angel Coin. According to folklore he carried one in his pocket throughout his reign, only to fatefully lose it the day before his final defeat at Waterloo.

It may be more than half a millennium since it was painted but Albrecht Dürer’s ‘Young Hare’ still has an uncanny ability to move and fascinate. Probably the most famous depiction of an animal in the history of European art, the magnificent watercolour shows all the cuddly characteristics that have led this shy and lovable creature to take its place in Middle-European Easter tradition − and make it the ideal subject for our delightful Easter coin.
Durable Dürer
Painted in Dürer’s workshop in Nuremberg in 1502, the ‘Feldhase’, as it is called in German, is the most iconic painting in the vast collection of Vienna’s Albertina museum. Another of Dürer’s masterpieces of observational art in the Albertina collection is the ‘Great Piece of Turf’, which forms the background to the hare on the coin’s reverse, above Dürer’s famous monogram. Painted with almost photographic accuracy, both watercolours are testament to the genius of their creator, whose powers of observation have never been equalled. A Renaissance man, both literally and figuratively, Albrecht Dürer 1471-1528 has been compared to Leonardo da Vinci for the breadth and depth of his artistic and intellectual pursuits. He was a printmaker, engraver and theorist, as well as a painter who pioneered the self-portrait, yet his watercolour of a hare is perhaps his most recognisable work. How he managed to capture such a detailed image of a wild and constantly moving animal remains a mystery, which no doubt adds to the enduring allure of the ‘Young Hare’.
