Feature: 35 years of the Erasmus programme

Description: The design is a mix of two major elements of the Erasmus programme: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus himself, and the allegory of its influence over Europe. The first one is symbolised by one of the most known depiction of Erasmus. The second one is symbolised by a beam of links going across the coin from a beacon to another, representing the numerous intellectual and human exchanges between the European students. As a reference to Europe, some of these links form other stars, born from the synergy between the countries. The figure 35, for 35th anniversary comes out from the stars in a contemporary graphical style. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.

Never in the history of Belgian numismatics a whole profession has been honored with a commemorative coin. The Royal Mint of Belgium will issue a unique 2 euro coin, in appreciation of the exceptional efforts of healthcare workers during the covid-pandemic. The BU-version in coincard is a true honor to all healthcare workers. This is illustrated on the packaging through a graphic display of caring hands and hearts. On the left side of the coin itself you can read the text ‘DANKE – MERCI – DANK U’. Also healthcare-elements are shown, like a stethoscope, a heart monitor, a syringe, the symbol of a wheelchair and a mortar with pestle. On the right there is a healthcare staff member pictured with a face mask and beside that two letters LL (the initials of designer Luc Luycx). On the bottom you can see the year date 2022, the country designation BE, the privy mark (the coat of arms of Herzele) and the mint mark of the Royal Dutch Mint (Mercury staff).

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Battista Montini, born in Concesio in 1897 and elected pope in 1963 taking the name Paul VI. The Vatican State Mint celebrates this anniversary with the 2 euro bimetallic coin in a dual brilliant uncirculated and proof version. On the coin we see the Pope smiling and opening his arms wide with the gesture he often used when greeting the crowds. He wears the cassock tied at the waist with a fascia bearing the coat of arms of his pontificate embroidered on the bottom, his cape and cloak. Our artist Daniela Longo produced the engraving on the reverse side of the coin showing the tapestry displayed on the facade of St. Peter’s Basilica during the beatification of Paul VI. The celebration took place on 19 October 2014 with Pope Francis presiding and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in attendance. The tapestry shows the smiling pope standing as he opens his arms as if to virtually embrace all the people.
