A true open-air museum, the historic center of Rome offers an immersion in more than two millennia of history, including many remains from Antiquity. Among other things, the Colosseum is a true testimony to Roman engineering and architecture. Able to accommodate up to 50,000 spectators, it was the scene of shows, including the famous gladiator fights, wild animal hunts and reenactments of naval battles. The historic center of Rome has suffered many disasters such as the Great Fire of Rome in 64 or the earthquake of 1349, but the city has always recovered and rebuilt.
On the front, in the foreground, a Roman murmillo, equipped with a shield and a sword, confronting a lion. This scene recalls the "spectacles" that took place in the Colosseum, where gladiators fought wild beasts to entertain the public. In the background, the left part of the Colosseum in detailed view and the right part in schematic outline of the structure to evoke its construction/reconstruction.
The reverse is common to all coins in the UNESCO series of this year 2025. It represents the terrestrial globe with the parallels and meridians on the left side and the inscriptions of major sites classified as UNESCO World Heritage on the right side. These inscriptions are as if engraved in stone, which echoes the Rosetta Stone. The left side of the globe is surrounded by the UNESCO logo as well as the marking "World Heritage".
